Adepticon Warhammer 40k Championships!

Battle Report for the first battle of the 2014 Adepticon Warhammer 40k Championship tournament.

I'm going to do the best I can to write a battle report for my first fight at Adepticon.  Truth be told the first one always seems to stand out a little more.  After 3 different events and 11 games things tend to blur together a little bit.  Fortunately I was smart enough to take a few photos of this fight.  My first opponent was from Quebec and aside from the accent he was great guy to play against.  Here is the list that he brought.  With pictures.  One of the things that was unique about his army is that for his wave serpents he had light kits installed which created a nice effect.  Instead of the old swooping hawk models he was using the new Forgeworld Aspect Warriors.

I won the roll off and elected to go first.  I hopped that I would be able to get the jump on my opponent and hopefully take down some of his wave serpents and venoms early on.  My opponent and I both deployed defensively with most of our units concealed behind cover.  I kept my wraith lord and wraithknight in reserve since I figured they would get slaughtered by the venoms if they were on the board. I deployed the guardians with the Farseer in the center inside the ageis defence line.  The Farseer  got Guide, Prescience, and Fortune.  The Spiders and two wave serpents took cover behind the ruins on the right.  I placed the other wave serpent with the wraith guard on the left.  The rangers were placed in the ruins.    Since my opponent had more vehicles he was not able to hide them as effectively.

Turn 1
I moved the wave serpents to the far right side to shoot around the building.  The warp spiders stayed put for the first turn.  On my first turn I was able to destroy one wave serpent and a venom on the right killing a few DE that were in the venom.  On the left I was able to strip two hull points off another wave serpent.
First blood to me.
My opponent moved his vehicles around and moved up his Wraithknight up. During my opponents first turn he managed to destroy my wave serpent on the left with just a single volley from one of his wave serpents.

Turn 2
My Wraith Lord and one unit of bikes came in on turn 2.  I had the Wraith Lord move up and hide behind the ruins on the right.  The spiders moved up in the ruins and the Wraith guard started running for center.  The wave serpents repositioned to take some more shots.  I unloaded a fair amount of fire into his wave serpents and did nothing.  I was able to destroy another Venom and killed a few guys inside.
My opponent moved up and was only able to stun and take a single hull point off a wave serpent.
The pictures below are from the end of turn 2.

Turn 3
My WraithKnight came in on Turn 3 along with the second unit of jetbikes.  The jetbikes hid over on the left side of the board and I brought the WraithKnight up the center and cast Fortune on it.  The Warp spiders moved up to strike at a venom.  I unloaded on wave serpents and venoms with everything I had and didn't even manage to scratch the paint.  The Dice gods had turned on me.
And decided to Favor my opponent.  He moved up and was able to shoot down both remaining wave serpents.  Inflicted 4 wounds on the Wraith Lord, failed 3 and he died.  He was also able to put a hurt on the warp spiders even thought they went to ground for a 2+ save.  The swooping hawks also came in and put a hurt on the guardians.
Turn 3 was definitely the tipping point for the game.  I had a fairly poor turn with the dice and at the same time they got really hot for my opponent.

Turn 4
Well with the losses I suffered in the last round I was definitely facing an up-hill battle. In turn 4 I was finally able to take down another wave serpent and another venom.  My wraithguard raced towards center to try and contest the objective there.
The splinter cannons started to take their toll.  Stripping a few wounds off the Wraithknight even though he was fortuned.  The fire dragons and Spirit Seer also assaulted the WraithKnight.  The Rangers got wiped out by a wave serpent.  The swooping hawks skyleaped back into reserve.

Turn 5
With random game leangth I had only one more chance to try and take the objectives.  I fortuned a bike squad and turbo-boosted both squads over to objectives hopping that they would be able to hold on.
During my opponents turn he really stuck the nail in the coffin.  The swooping hawks came back in and put more hurt on the guardians.  He killed off one of the bike squads and brought his WraithKnight into the fight with mine.  Amazingly my Wraithknight managed to hold on.

Turn 6
There wasn't much to say about turn 6  My opponent secured 3 objectives soundly and continued to press me.  We had time left to play, but we rolled and did not have a turn 7.

Overall it was a really good game.  My opponent and I both agreed that Turn three was the turn around point and he though after turn 1 he was going to loose.  The only thing that I would have done differently if I had a chance to play the game over would have been to start the Wraithknight on the table and fortuned him right away hopefully soaking up some of the firepower that killed my other units.

I definitely like Adepticon you get to play against great people with great armies.  Even though I didn't win I think that this was the best game of the weekend for me.  I always like the games where you can identify that tipping point, the knifes edge that a battle balances on!  Also my opponent voted me as his favorite opponent of the day!  Although the beer and apple pie probably helped with that...
